If you haven't come across the drool-worth Insta account @brownpapernutrition, you've been living under a rock. The brains behind your daily dose of food porn is talented Jacqueline Alwill. Jac is a qualified nutritionist, personal trainer, mother and utterly passionate about everything health, food and life. She is committed to providing the nutrition support and education to give your health a makeover, feel radiant and put an energetic bounce into your life.
Jack believes living optimally is about finding the balance on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level, loving your body and feeling well nourished. I personally love her message - she's all about understanding and eating fresh delicious whole foods, using your food as your medicine and not feeling intimated by the journey to get there. Wonderfull stuff.
The Brown Paper Bag originated from a simple concept: sharing simple and nutritious food. A little bundle of whole food goodness waiting for you in a Brown Paper Bag, at home or as you leave her nutrition practice because good health and good food is about sharing it with those around you.
Jac has now collaborated with natural skincare brand Jurlique to promote the importance of looking after yourself—both inside and out. As part of its 30th Anniversary Jurlique is celebrating its core philosophy by promoting healthy living through nutrition and an active lifestyle.
I catch up with Jac to see how she manages to fit it all into her working week, along with looking after one gorgeous little boy.
1. How did your journey to becoming a health food advocate begin?
Gosh – a long time ago as a teenager even! As a career path, my journey began about six years ago. I left corporate world, working in advertising and media strategy, and worked as a personal trainer to support my studies in Nutritional Medicine. Halfway through my studies in nutrition I became a mumma, so I took some time off and finished when Jet was about 18 months old. I worked in organic skincare for a period of time and then decided to take the plunge and created The Brown Paper Bag, which has been my ultimate passion in health and nutrition and is about two and a half-years-old now.
2. Who or what inspires you:
My son Jet, (he’s five now) has taught me so much about life, play, creativity, health and love. He is my greatest teacher and source of inspiration.
3. Your day on a plate:
I always struggle to answer this one because every day is pretty different and that’s the best part! I love creating beautiful food and ensure that is how I eat throughout the day. However, if I were to draw my favourite day of eating for you it might look like this…
Breakfast: Sauteed spinach, kale, peas, coriander, chilli with two eggs cracked on top, if there’s some quinoa or left over roast sweet potato I’ll add that too.
Lunch: Shredded chicken, avo, rocket (maybe some feta) on home made buckwheat seed bread (recipe on the blog)
Dinner: Miso salmon with steamed broccolini, zucchini, sprouts, wakame, sesame seeds and radish
Snacks: One of my Citrus Balls or any of the little treats we have on hand from work or catering, or just a carrot with hummus!
Special treats: definitely Raw Choc Avo Tart {recipe below}. Yum.
4: Your favourite way to get moving:
I’m loving the classes at Lifecyle Fitness in Bronte; they’re the best! And in summer running the back of Bondi beach in the soft sand (the highway as we call it) with a dip in the ocean is one of my favourite ways to start the day.
5. Three things you can’t live without:
- Jet, my family and friends
- Sunshine
- Beautiful food
6. Your secret vice
Exercise! Keeps me sane, focused, energized and happy for all the right reasons – be it at the gym, on the beach, in yoga – I absolutely crave it.
7. Top song on your playlist at the moment:
Ngaiire – Once
8. Your mantra:
Every day you have two choices…stay in bed with your dreams, or wake up and chase them.
