The Secret to a Healthy Mocktail

You might know that I don't drink. Aside from the fact that I prefer to spend my money on other things, alcohol actually causes me to have panic attacks. Apparently my body produces too much adrenalin (which I control with exercise) but alcohol is the trigger to send me into overdrive. Turned out to be a blessing in disguise really - no hangovers, no clinging to the toilet, and no embarrassing sext messages to the postman.

Of course, mocktails are the answer to my social woes come party season. Most commercial ones are crammed with syrups and fruit juices - making them crazy on the sugar charts. So what's the secret? Herbal infusions with sparking water and all sorts of herbs + citrus.

Try these on for size:

Virgin Mojito

  • 2 bags Peppermint Tea, strongly brewed in 1/2 cup hot water
  • 2 cups soda water
  • 6 - 10 drops liquid stevia (or granulated)
  • Juice of 1 large lime
  • 1/4 cup shredded mint leaves

Add everything to a pitcher, mix and enjoy!

English Summer Spitzer

  • 2 bags Rhubarb + Strawberry Herbal Tea, strongly brewed in 1/2 cup hot water
  • 2 cups sparking water
  • 6 - 10 drops liquid stevia (or granulated)
  • 1/2 cup fresh strawberries, sliced

Add everything to a pitcher, mix and enjoy!

TIP: Make your own mocktails by popping a tea bag into a glass, add sparking water, dress up with your favourite fruits and herbs, add ice and you'll have a summer stunner to impress even the fussiest of palates (including me). Don't forget my invite.
