Healthy Hangouts: 5 minutes with Tiffiny Hall

Tiffiny Hall - The Biggest Loser. Heathy Hangouts with The Fit Foodie

I loved this girl since I layed eyes on her high-kicks on The Biggest Loser. She's got arm definition I could only dream of, but man, she works hard for it. She returns to the show this year as a master trainer along with Commando Steve, Michelle Bridges and Shannon Ponton, + it will be all the better for it. In the mean-time, she's just whipped up a book that I'll be running out to buy. Sounds like there's some pretty divine recipes in there. I caught up with this powerhouse to get a glimpse into life. There's also a workout for you to try at home!

Q&A

1. HOW DID YOUR JOURNEY TO BECOMING A HEALTH NINJA AND WELLNESS AUTHOR BEGIN?

My family run Taekwondo schools, Hall’s Taekwondo. I’m a 5th dan black belt in taekwondo and I’ve been teaching taekwondo classes since I was 15 in the family business. I love working in health and fitness, teaching bootcamps, group fitness, self-defense and boxing at Halls. I believe in the Taekwondo philosophy of wellness. Tae kwon do is Korean for foot, fist, art. You need to train the mind first and then the mind trains the body, the foot and the fist. Looking after yourself is an art, a way, a journey. You never stop, it’s not a quick-fix, a crash diet or magic pill, it’s about conscious healthy choices. It’s what I call the black belt mindset. Working with students in my family’s schools and seeing the improvements in their confidence and self-esteem made me want to work in fitness, achieve more qualifications and continue to inspire and motivate people to be the best they could be. I am very lucky I can pass on what I’ve learned through You Beauty! It’s all the best bits of years and years of testing what are the most effective methods for weight loss, fitness and motivation. You Beauty! is a celebration of making health a lifestyle and choosing choices that release your inner sparkle.

2. WHO OR WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Simple. My students, clients and contestants on Network Ten’s TBL Families. They all want to work on themselves, to be the best versions of themselves so they can give to others more holistically. I am inspired by anyone who has a dream or a goal and then works for it. I learned early on that the magic of dreams don’t work unless you do. You Beauty! is a fun manual for eating clean and working out in a fun way, but it also offers lots of inspo on how to set goals and intentions and how to  psych yourself up. There’s a fitness bucket list, motivational post-its, habit makeovers and keys to a fresh start. It’s so important to have inspo on a health journey so you make every day count.

3. YOUR DAY ON A PLATE?

Breakfast: egg white omelette with spinach, capsicum, and mushrooms

Juice: Salad Glass

Snack: Choc Hit bliss balls with a long black

Lunch: Chicken, vegetable and risoni soup (I cook up in bulk and freeze for the week and carry around in a thermos – tops for winter!)

Snack: can of tuna with four bean mix (if hungry after training)

Dinner: White fish and greek salad

Every single recipe is in my book You Beauty! Can’t miss out on the bliss balls.

4: FAVOURITE WAY TO GET MOVING?

Strap on my runners, start my heart rate monitor and just run. I don’t have to look for parking, worry about what I’m wearing, schedule it in. I just get up as early as it takes to squeeze in an 8km sprint around my local park before breakfast. In winter it’s beanie and a thousand jackets, but I love the crisp air expanding my lungs. I love the freedom and there are no excuses. If raining then I love a night taekwondo class with all my friends. Training with other fit folk is the easiest way to keep motivated and to stay accountable.

5. THREE THINGS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

  1. Black belt. I’m a 5th dan black belt in Taekwondo and I’ve had the same black belt soaked with blood sweat and tears for more than 15 years. It’s my most prized possession and represents my health philosophy. Health, like a martial art, is an art – something that takes discipline, commitment and you must practice every day.
  2. My recipes from You Beauty!
  3. Licorice and coffee. I love my coffee.

6. YOUR SECRET VICE

As listed in one of things I can’t live without – licorice. I eat it by the bag full. I also make a mean banana bread that should last all week but never sees past day 2! My husband loves it too.

7. TOP SONG ON YOUR PLAYLIST

Anything Girl Talk or Taylor Swift. Bad Blood is stuck in my head right now!

8. YOUR MANTRA

Thoughts become things.

I love this because what you focus on manifests- in a really good way or a really bad way. It’s true what you think about you bring about.

9. TOP 3 ACCOUNTS TO FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM

For something funny: @thefatjewish

For something yummy: @_foodmatters

For something chic: @opshoptorunway – Alex transforms second hand vintage fashion with new designer brands – I love her mix and match style.
