Review: Back 2 Earth Retreat, Berry + WIN A STAY!!

Berry is a picturesque village just a little over 2 hours away from Sydney’s CBD. I’ve driven through it on a number of accessions while road-tripping to the south coast, but never had the joy of spending time there. When I was invited to try out a raw, vegan retreat just 5 minutes from the village centre, I jumped at the chance!

Last Friday I packed a bag with Mr Fit Foodie, and hit the road to Back2Earth. Though the journey was pretty painless, it felt so refreshing to be out in the country air absorbing views of rolling hills and beautiful coast. Very reminiscent of my English hometown – quaint and simple with bags of old-world charm.

About Back2Earth:

Set over 5 acres of beautiful farmland, Back2Earth includes 3 self-contained apartments where you can get back to nature. Owners Mark + Jenny follow a predominantly raw, vegan lifestyle and are motivated by health, spiritualism, humanitarianism and an environmentally conscious way of life.

The countryside and views here are spectacular. A great way to break out from the city life and relax in nature.

There’s a gorgeous array of medium-to-small animals, including mini horses, Boer goats, alpacas, dorper sheep, a muscovy duck, rabbits and chickens. You have the opportunity both morning and evening to feed the animals, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can help groom the horses and muck them out (wellington boost provided!).

If you’re more of a hands-off kind person, the views down to the paddocks and animals are gorgeous.

Things to do:

At the farm you can do everything or nothing at all {read: bliss}. Be warned, the wifi is temperamental at best and the phone signal poor – so don’t expect to be on emails or calling your Auntie. This is actually a saviour in disguise for most of us right?!

You can spend as little or as much time with owners Jenny + Mark, who are very accommodating to your needs and plans. They are more than happy to kick back and talk about their passions over a cup of homemade herbal tea, or give advice on where to go for the day.

Cool, so what can you actually do?

  • massage treatments
  • 1 hour float tank* sessions are available for everyone.
  • walk through neighboring national parklands
  • swim in the ocean
  • hand feed the animals
  • collect the eggs, muck out the horses (if you’re the farmy-kind).
  • in-room books, games and DVDs
  • small walks to all-terrain hikes
  • explore Berry’s cafes and culture
  • take a segway tour
  • pick seasonal fruit and veggies from the garden
  • raw food classes
  • therapy sessions
  • just relax and watch the birds fly overhead. Seriously.

*Floating is a way of attaining deep relaxation. In summary, you lay in a shallow pod of salt water with no light, sound or gravity (you’re floating baby!). Floatation therapy is used widely in the treatment of stress, anxiety, jet lag and to improve concentration and creativity. Sports performance and “wind down” is also enhanced during floating.

Mr Fit Foodie and I irritatingly were stuck down with colds, so we had to put the hike on hold, but we did walk into Berry (a much smaller 2.5k stroll) to get out caffiene fix and explore the shops. Head to Berry’s infamous tea shop for cute kitchen goodies and a green tea, or check out the local book store and get lost in the huge range of healthy cookbooks.

However you choose to relax and unwind, it’s quite impossible to leave with the worries you came in with. Everything melts away as you have time to focus on you. Its a luxury I rarely allow myself, and often think I don’t need, but I actually surprised myself by getting stuck into a good book and zoning out for a few days. I’ll be honest, it was a struggle at first not to check my phone every 5 minutes, but when I came to terms with minimal internet connection, the rest was pure bliss.

In Summary, a perfect weekend getaway for those looking for a break from the norm. Pack a rain mack, a good book, and indulge in you for just 48 hours.
