WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST SILENT YOGA DISCO

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST SILENT YOGA DISCO

Not familiar with silent discos with yoga?? A live DJ (the disco bit) plays a set which you hear via a pair of wireless headphones (the silent bit), while an instructor takes you through a yoga class (the yoga bit).

By now most of you Aussies would be familiar with Flow After Dark, the silent yoga disco series that has been sweeping across Sydney and the media for the past few months. #toocool

On the success of these sold-out events, Flow Athletic have decided to launch bigger and better versions, one in Melbourne on June 14 and the other in Sydney on July 19. These events are set to be the biggest silent yoga discos that the world has ever seen!

The events have just taken off’ says Ben Lucas, founder of Flow Athletic. ‘We hosted a smaller version of the event for our clients in February and due to the overwhelming response from that event, Stylerunner approached us asking to co host an event with them. That event took place in April and we sold out in 3 days and had hundreds of people on the waitlist. It was a no brainer to find bigger spaces and invite more people.’

So what can you expect at Silent Yoga Disco events and why are they so unique?

We have asked Australia’s favouite yogi and the host of Flow After Dark Kate Kendall to shed some light.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR FIRST SILENT YOGA DISCO

IT’S A NEW KINDA WORKOUT

‘I think that Australians really like to try new things when it comes to health and fitness, so when you introduce a DJ and lights to a yoga class it certainly entices people,’ says Kendall.

‘This style of class is also great for people who are new to yoga or for those who feel intimidated by yoga as it is so different and light hearted that everyone feels comfortable.’

LOSE YOUR INHIBITIONS

‘Sometimes yoga can seem a little scary for the newbies as it has such a profile, and I am sure all of the tricky insta poses that makes everyone look like a pro doesn’t help’ says Kendall.

‘Furthermore while many fitness classes have loud music to distract you from everyone else when you are starting out, yoga is somewhat silent so some people can feel a little self conscious in the beginning.’

‘The beauty of Flow After Dark is that everyone is wearing Silent Sounds headphones which are noise cancelling. Add DJ James Mack and my lead into the mix and you literally can’t hear anything else.’

‘Expect to feel like you are all alone in a sea full of people. Everyone is moving the same as you and everyone has the same intention but you can’t hear them and therefore you are less likely to pay any attention to them. The headphones eliminate much of the distraction around you, allowing you to pay attention to your own practice.’

IT’S THEMED

‘For those who love a dress up, the good news is that all of our events are themed. Our last event at Luna Park was ‘Circus’, our Melbourne event will most likely be ‘Gatsby’ as it is at the Melbourne Town Hall and our Sydney event is going to be ‘Christmas in July’.

‘All of the Flow Athletic team get into the spirit with costumes and make up, so feel free to dress up too! It only adds to the fun.’

YOU WILL FEEL MORE CONNECTED TO THE INSTRUCTOR

‘When you’re wearing the headphones, you will literally hear my voice whispering directly into your ear to lead you along which almost makes it feel like a private session’ says Kendall.

‘You won’t have to look around and strain to hear the instructions as the class is literally delivered straight through your wireless headphone to you.’

GET EXCITED ABOUT TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT

‘There’s no doubt that trying something different is exciting! It’s also a great way to get you motivated to workout so get your friends or colleagues together and make a night of it!’
