10 Hydrating Foods for Summer

10 Hydrating Foods for summer

It can get seriously hot over in Australia during the summer. And whilst we know that water is the best thing for hydrating our bodies, what you may not know is that there are some foods that are seriously hydrating too. Here are our faves.

Cucumber

They don’t say “cool as a cucumber” for nothing! This fresh, juicy vegetable is cool on the body and extremely hydrating. Great sources of B vitamins, cucumbers rehydrate the body and replenish daily vitamins due to their high water content (made up of 95% water). Did you know cucumber can also be used topically for skin irritations and sunburn?

Aloe Vera

Great for the summer months, aloe vera is another cooling ingredient, especially on skin burns and sunburn. A potent antioxidant and with antibacterial properties, aloe vera helps with burn healing, reduces dental plaque build up when used as a mouth wash, and can help relieve constipation.

Watermelon

Summer’s perfect, ultra hydrating fruit! Watermelon has been known to decrease the risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. It can also help to prevent constipation and promote regularity for a healthy digestive tract.

Make some delicious frozen watermelon popsicles this summer!

Coconut water

Your best friend this summer, coconut water prevents dehydration and can relieve acidity and heartburn. It can also act as a good hangover cure after long summer days celebrating a little too hard!

Yoghurt

In Ayurvedic medicine, yoghurt is a very cooling ingredient and is often used with spicy curries. Yoghurt is good for healthy gut function due to its live active culture. It strengthens your immunity due to its probiotic content, as well as contributing to healthy bones due to high levels of calcium and vitamin D.

Activated charcoal sports drink water

Charcoal is known to rid your body of toxins, and can also help reduce instances of acne and other skin impurities you might suffer from during the hotter months.

Recipe: Mix the juice of 1 apple, 1 tablespoon of activated charcoal, a pinch of Himalayan salt and the juice of 1 lemon.

Mint

Mint has an extremely cooling effect on the body and is super calming to the nervous system. Promoting digestion, it also soothes the stomach in cases of indigestion or inflammation, and is a fantastic remedy for nausea. Use mint as an effective way to clear up congestion of the nose, throat, bronchi and lungs.

Hibiscus

Rich in Vitamin C, hibiscus promotes a healthy immune system and is a great contributor for iron absorption into the body. Hibiscus is commonly used to flush out toxins due to its diuretic properties.

Grapefruit

Containing fat burning enzymes, grapefruit aids in weight loss – great news for the summer months and after a season of indulgence! This very versatile fruit can also help prevent arthritis, lower cholesterol levels, treat the common cold and fever symptoms, dissolve gallstones, boost liver function and enhance immunity against infections. A powerhouse fruit!

Lettuce

The common lettuce is a storehouse of vital nutrients, vitamins and fibre that contribute to healthy skin. It’s very high water content means it naturally flushes out toxins.
